iPhone 15 Common Issues and How to Fix Them
The iPhone 15 series introduced exciting new features, but some users have reported specific issues.

The iPhone 15 series represents one of Apple's most significant hardware updates in years, the switch to USB-C, the titanium frame on Pro models, the 48MP main camera system, and the new Dynamic Island on all models. These are meaningful improvements. But new hardware also means new failure modes, and we've seen a consistent set of issues come through our Kahului shop since the iPhone 15 launched.
Here's what to watch for, how to tell if it's a software problem you can fix yourself or a hardware issue that needs professional repair, and what the repair timeline looks like.
Screen Cracking Despite Ceramic Shield
Apple's Ceramic Shield, introduced with iPhone 12 and continued through the 15 series, is genuinely tougher than previous iPhone glass. It performs well in controlled drop tests. In real-world use in Maui, however, we still see cracked screens constantly. Concrete, tile, and asphalt are unforgiving surfaces at any angle, and the edge-on drop (landing on the corner of the frame) bypasses most of the protection Ceramic Shield provides.
The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max use a titanium frame instead of the aluminum frame on previous Pro models. Titanium is stronger, which is good. It's also slightly more slippery in the hand, which may contribute to drop frequency for some users. If you've cracked your iPhone 15 screen, we stock replacement assemblies for all four iPhone 15 models and screen repairs typically take 15 to 30 minutes.
USB-C Port Issues
The iPhone 15 is the first iPhone with USB-C, ending a decade of Lightning. Most people make the switch without any issues, but we've seen several types of port problems emerge:
- Debris accumulation: USB-C ports have a wider opening than Lightning and collect pocket lint, sand, and debris faster. In Maui especially, fine beach sand gets into everything. This is the most common cause of charging failures we see on iPhone 15 models. A professional port cleaning fixes this in about 20 minutes without any parts replacement.
- Physical connector damage: USB-C connectors have a small center pin that can bend if a cable is inserted at an angle under force. If your iPhone 15 charges intermittently or only when the cable is held at a specific angle, the port likely has physical damage.
- Data transfer speed issues: The iPhone 15 uses USB 2.0 speeds through its USB-C port. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max use USB 3 speeds. If you expected fast data transfer and aren't getting it, verify which model you have before assuming a hardware problem.
Battery Drain Faster Than Expected
The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus have larger batteries than their predecessors and generally excellent battery life. The Pro models have somewhat smaller batteries due to the thinner profile. If you're noticing battery drain that seems excessive, there are two likely causes:
Software issues: After a major iOS update, background processes often run for 24 to 48 hours recalibrating search indexes, re-downloading iCloud data, and optimizing app data. Battery drain during this period is normal. Wait two days after an update before concluding there's a hardware problem.
Hardware battery degradation: Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. If you're below 85% on a phone less than a year old, the battery may have degraded faster than expected, this happens more frequently in high-heat environments. We can replace the battery in 60 to 90 minutes. See our iPhone battery pricing.
Dynamic Island Malfunctions
The Dynamic Island, the software-animated pill around the front camera cutout, can exhibit display issues that appear to be hardware problems but are often software bugs. If the Dynamic Island animations are glitching, freezing, or displaying incorrectly, try these steps first:
- Restart the iPhone (hold side button + volume down, slide to power off)
- Update to the latest iOS version
- Reset all settings: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings
If the Island itself has dead pixels, visible lines, or physical display abnormalities around the cutout area, that's a hardware issue requiring screen replacement.
Camera System Issues
The iPhone 15 Pro features a 48MP main camera, a 12MP ultrawide, and a 12MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom. The standard iPhone 15 has a 48MP main and 12MP ultrawide. Camera issues we commonly see:
- Blurry photos or focus hunting: Often caused by the camera lens getting scratched or contaminated. The camera module can also be physically jarred by an impact. A free diagnostic will tell you which it is.
- Camera app crashes: Usually a software issue, restart the phone and update iOS before concluding it's hardware.
- Persistent black screen in camera app: This often indicates physical damage to the camera module from an impact, even if the rest of the phone appears fine.
- Foggy or cloudy lens from inside: This indicates moisture ingress. Do not assume this clears on its own, bring it in for inspection.
Overheating
Early iPhone 15 Pro models had a widely-reported overheating issue shortly after launch, which Apple addressed with iOS 17.0.3. If you're running an up-to-date version of iOS and still experiencing excessive heat during normal tasks, browsing, texting, navigation, it may indicate a hardware issue: a battery problem, a background process gone wrong, or internal component damage from a previous drop or water exposure.
Bring it in for a free diagnostic. We'll check battery health, run through component tests, and tell you exactly what's causing it.
Before You Bring It In
For any repair involving data, back up your iPhone first. Go to Settings → Your Name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. Also make note of your Apple ID and passcode, we need to test full functionality after the repair, which requires unlocking the device.
